Extraneous items I have been meaning to post, but keep forgetting:

Knives
Some of you have asked about purchasing blades. There are no particular blade styles, shapes, manufacturers or vendors that I, nor any of the systems that I represent endorse per se, except their own lines. For example the live blades designed and made under the Sayoc or Atienza systems were designed with specific tasks in mind, and created to exact specifications. Most blade makers (both mass production and custom handcrafted) created blades only for cutting chores or to fulfill a particular goal or aesthetic. For example, Strider Knives originally wanted to create a folding knife that was as strong as a fixed blade. RJ Martin told me a sign of a good knife is that you want to cut with it once you hold it in your hands, so along that theme RJ Martin’s blade ergonomics and composition do exactly that. OK, I’m running off on another tangent again…

Some of you had asked for suggestions where to look at blades and/or prices. Here are some of the common websites that I personally frequent:

www.knifecenter.com
www.newgraham.com
www.bluelinegear.com
www.truenorthknives.com

There are tons of others but these are the top ones I seem to go to more often than not, particularly if I am looking for something specific.

Equipment
For ALL IEFMA classes, you may want to think about getting a pair of light gloves. Boxing gloves are too bulky, but bag gloves or even MMA gloves would be fine. If there are times when we are working empty hand destructions, that might save your knuckles. I think I got my pair of bag gloves years ago at Sports Authority.

Testimonials
Lastly, if anyone would like to submit any testimonials I would be grateful and appreciative to use them here on the site.

See you guys soon.

Congratulations to Albert, Jay, Joe, Kerwin, Rex and Manny for completing the Winter 2011 session of Filipino Martial Arts through the City of Claremont. This session we worked heavily on guntings/destructions with single stick, double stick, blade and empty hand, footwork variations, stick material such as blocks, deflections and disarms and more. Great job gentlemen. See you in two weeks.

This morning IEFMA had the privilege of having Pamana Tuhon Christopher Sayoc Sr., tune in live online and watch class. It was great having Pamana Tuhon there to give instruction and interact with the group. Everyone did a great job, and welcome again to the new students.

December 2010 Schedule

Due to several holiday and travel commitments, FMA classes through the City of Claremont will not begin the Winter Schedule until January 2011. SAYOC students will be notified regarding classes in December.

Sunday, December 5th, Guro Brian Calaustro will be holding a Sayoc/SKSTA members only seminar covering the rarely seen Touch Point material. I highly recommend all students registered with the Sayoc organization attend. I will NOT be holding class that weekend so that everyone can go.

All students, please email me at jmarana@iefma.com your schedules of availability so that I can make class arrangements for the month. Weekdays and weeknights are preferred.

This past November 16, three sessions of “Filipino Martial Arts” completed the first year of classes offered through the City of Claremont Department of Recreation. I am extremely proud of my students, and hope to see interest continue and build in 2011 and beyond. Special congratulations to those students who have participated in all three sessions. The second Thursday of next month, December 9th two of my senior students plan to visit Guro Dan Inosanto’s academy in Marina del Rey with me. If anyone else would like to share a ride and come along, please just let me know.

With appreciation,
Guro Joe

Classic Paul Vunak

Paul Vunak’s martial arts videos in the 80’s were my first introduction to seeing Filipino Martial Arts! Here is a classic clip of him demonstrating the use of the “hubud” drill as a training tool.

Mandatory viewing for all IEFMA Sayoc and City of Claremont students. This is one of the best presentations of the Filipino Martial Arts as a whole, as taught by Guro Dan Inosanto. An open invitation stands to all current students to go and visit to watch or train with me at the Inosanto Academy on Thursday mornings in Marina del Rey.
